Liability Coverage - Most states require every licensed driver to carry liability insurance. Liability coverage pays for any damage that the driver inflicts on other drivers in an accident. Bodily injury coverage covers damage for injury or death that the driver causes, while property damage liability handles vehicle and property damage. This coverage also covers the cost of defense in case of a lawsuit relating to an auto accident.
Bodily Injury Liability - This type of liability insurance covers the cost of any injuries or the death of a person as a result of an accident a driver causes. A few examples of coverage would be medical bills, loss of income, hospital bills; and damages from pain and suffering. Bodily injury insurance only covers the victims of the accident, so the insured’s own medical bills would not be covered. BI is the short term used for this coverage in the auto insurance industry.
Property Damage Liability - Property damage liability insurance covers damage that the insured driver causes to another person’s property. This covers damage to other people’s cars, fences, trees, houses, etc.
Uninsured and Under-Insured Motorist Coverage - This pays for the insured’s injuries caused by an uninsured driver.
Medical Payments Coverage - This coverage pays for the medical cost of the insured and family members, regardless of fault. It also applies when a covered person is injured in an accident as a pedestrian. This coverage will only pay for medical bills; unlike Uninsured Motorist Coverage, which would cover other losses such as loss wages, loss of consortium, pain and suffering, etc.
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage - This pays for damage caused to the driver’s vehicle by an uninsured driver. It must be verified that the driver at fault for the accident was uninsured at the time of the loss. Hit and Run incidents do not apply.
Comprehensive Coverage - This covers damage done to the insured’s vehicle caused by incidents such as theft, vandalism, rocks, and etc. It does not cover damage caused by collisions.
Safety Equipment Coverage - This coverage will waive the comprehensive deductible when a loss has occurred to the vehicle’s glass. This is for all glass windows on the vehicle including the windshield, headlights, and taillights. This is available only when the vehicle has comprehensive coverage.
Collision Coverage - This coverage pays for the cost of damage to the insured’s vehicle when the driver hits another vehicle or object.
A deductible is the dollar amount the insured will pay out of pocket before an insurance company pays for the damage.
Named Driver Restriction Removal - Our basic contract covers the insured’s vehicle for comprehensive or collision coverage only when an active driver that is listed on the policy was operating the vehicle at the time of the loss. With this optional coverage, comprehensive and collision coverage will apply even when the driver is not listed, provided the driver does not reside with the insured, is licensed, and is not a frequent operator of the vehicle.
